Anti-ban

How to avoid a WhatsApp ban when using the API

"Banned" is not one thing. WhatsApp applies restrictions at three different levels and they need very different responses — one is usually permanent, two lift on their own. Here is how to tell them apart, and how to keep a number safe in the first place.

Ban types

Three kinds of WhatsApp restriction

The symptoms look alike, but the right response is completely different for each one.

1

Direct ban

The whole account is blocked from WhatsApp

Usually permanent

What you see

  • The number stops connecting — reconnect attempts are refused and the phone never reaches "active" status.
  • Opening WhatsApp on the phone itself shows a message saying the account is not allowed to use WhatsApp.
  • Nothing sends or receives, on the phone or through the API.

Why it happens

  • Repeated reports or blocks from people you messaged.
  • A brand-new number that started high-volume outbound messaging immediately.
  • Behaviour WhatsApp classifies as bulk or automated messaging.

What Maytapi does: We detect this as a 403 from WhatsApp, record the number and stop retrying the connection. Repeatedly re-scanning the QR code will not recover the account and can make things worse.

What to do

  • ✓Do not keep re-scanning the QR code — it will not lift the ban.
  • ✓Appeal from the WhatsApp app on the phone itself (Request a review). Only WhatsApp can reverse it.
  • ✓If the appeal fails, move to a different number — and turn on Safe Mode on the new one before you start sending.
2

New-conversation restriction

You can reply, but you cannot start new chats

Temporary — has an end time

What you see

  • Sending returns error F12 ("temporarily restricted").
  • Conversations that already exist keep working normally in both directions.
  • Messages to numbers you have never messaged before do not arrive.
  • The account is otherwise healthy — it stays connected and keeps receiving.

Why it happens

  • Too many first-contact ("cold") messages in a short period.
  • A low reply rate — lots of outgoing messages, very few answers coming back.
  • Recipients reporting or blocking the number.

What Maytapi does: WhatsApp reports this to us with an end time, and we surface it as error F12 instead of retrying. Retrying does not help and only adds to the signal that caused the restriction.

What to do

  • ✓Stop all first-contact messaging until the restriction lifts. Keep replying to people who write to you first — inbound conversations are exactly the signal that helps.
  • ✓Turn on Safe Mode (Tier 1 or 2) before you resume outbound messaging.
  • ✓When you resume, spread out first-contact messages instead of sending them back to back.
3

Restriction on linked devices only

The phone can start new chats — the API cannot

Temporary — easy to mistake for a bug

What you see

  • Same symptom as the previous type from the API side: first-contact messages do not arrive.
  • But the same message sent by hand from the phone itself works fine.
  • This is the one most often reported as "the API is broken" — it is not; the restriction is real, just narrower.

Why it happens

  • The behaviour WhatsApp flagged came from the linked device (WhatsApp Web / the API session), not from the phone.
  • Sending at a steady machine-like rhythm, identical text to many recipients, or links in first messages.

What Maytapi does: We see the same restriction signal and return error F12. The scope difference comes from WhatsApp, not from us — which is why the phone can still do what the API cannot.

What to do

  • ✓Confirm it first: send to a brand-new number by hand from the phone, then to another brand-new number through the API. If the phone works and the API does not, this is the one.
  • ✓Turn on Safe Mode — its rate limits, minimum gaps and pacing target exactly the linked-device behaviour that triggers this.
  • ✓Vary your message text instead of sending an identical template to everyone, and keep links out of first messages.
Diagnosis

Telling them apart

The quickest test: send to a brand-new number by hand from the phone, then to a different brand-new number through the API.

Prevention

Reducing the risk

None of these guarantee a number stays safe — WhatsApp does not publish its rules or explain its decisions. These are the factors that consistently matter.

  • 01

    Warm new numbers up

A new number that starts sending at full volume on day one is the single most common way to get banned. Safe Mode ramps it up over about two weeks, and the Warming Up tool builds real conversation history by having numbers in the warming pool message each other.

  • 02

    Keep the conversation two-way

WhatsApp watches how many of your messages get answered. A number that only sends and never receives looks like a broadcast tool. Prioritise conversations people start with you.

  • 03

Do not send identical messages to everyone

The same text or image repeated across many chats in a short window is a strong bulk-messaging signal. Varying the text — even slightly — helps.

  • 04

Leave links out of first messages

A link in the very first message to someone who has never messaged you is treated far more suspiciously than the same link later in the conversation.

  • 05

Keep the connection in the right region

A session connecting from far away from where the number is registered is an extra risk signal. A proxy in the right region keeps this consistent.

Safe Mode · beta

Safe Mode: a two-week warm-up for new numbers

Safe Mode ramps a number up gradually: message rate, daily volume, new chats per day, links in first messages and group actions all open up step by step, and it switches itself off after day 14. It is never turned on automatically — you enable it per number from the console.

Safe Mode is in beta. It is applied to every message a phone sends while it is on, but the limits below are a starting point and may be calibrated between releases.

When it is worth turning on

  • ✓A brand-new SIM that has just been registered on WhatsApp — the highest-risk case there is.
  • ✓A number that was banned or restricted before and is going back into service.
  • ✓A number that has been idle for a long time and is about to start sending again.
  • ✓Any number where you are about to raise sending volume significantly.

  1. Day 0–1 · Tier 1

    The strictest step

A good first day looks like answering people who wrote to you, plus a handful of first contacts — not a campaign.

  2. Day 2–3 · Tier 2

    Still cautious, twice the room

This is where most numbers start to feel usable for normal support traffic.

  3. Day 4–7 · Tier 3

Links open up, group actions return

From here the number behaves like an ordinary, established account.

  4. Day 8–10 · Tier 4

    Close to normal

Most integrations no longer notice Safe Mode at this point.

  5. Day 11–14 · Tier 5

    Last step before graduation

The remaining limits are close to what a heavy real user would do anyway.

  6. Day 15+

Graduated — Safe Mode turns itself off

No limits any more. You can turn it back on later if a number needs a careful restart.

What happens when you hit a limit

Speed limits delay a message; volume and rule limits reject it with an error code. Nothing is silently dropped.

Help center →
Can Maytapi lift a WhatsApp ban?

No. Only WhatsApp can reverse a ban. For a direct ban, appeal from the WhatsApp app on the phone (Request a review). Temporary new-conversation restrictions lift on their own when their end time passes.

What does error F12 mean?

F12 means WhatsApp has temporarily restricted the number from starting new conversations. Existing chats keep working. Stop first-contact messages until it lifts, keep answering inbound messages, and turn on Safe Mode before you resume.

Why does sending from the phone work but the API does not?

That is a restriction on linked devices only. WhatsApp flagged the behaviour of the linked session (WhatsApp Web / the API), so the phone can still start chats while the API cannot. It is temporary.

Does Safe Mode guarantee my number will not be banned?

No. It reduces the risk by warming a number up gradually, but WhatsApp does not publish its rules. It works best combined with two-way conversations, varied message text and no links in first messages.

Is Safe Mode turned on automatically?

No. It is never enabled automatically. You turn it on per number from the console and can turn it off at any time without any penalty.
